Coronavirus spreads through farts? Here's what Australian Researcher Dr Andy Tagg has to claim
According to recent reports, the answer to this question is yes after the COVID-19 Corona Virus was found in the stool of more than 50% of the patients who found positive for coronavirus.
Doctor Tagg announced on Twitter to the world about his groundbreaking discovery : "So farts CAN have the power to spray talc long distances. And, in terms of size, a particle of talcum powder is 5 times bigger than a 5-micron aerosol droplet."
Dr Andy Tagg further wrote : "Dr. K and Luke Tennant volunteered to fart on a petri dish.
There was no growth when the fart was filtered by trousers but with no barrier between agar and arse gut flora proliferated."
Coronavirus has put the entire world in lockdown, With the usage of masks and adopting other sanitary measures (Viz. Sanitizers) made compulsory, people around the world are adopting all neccessary measures and taking preventive action to keep themselves safe from danger as far as possible.
However, researchers say that there is a growing possibility that there can be something far more contagious carrier of the mysterious viral disease :: your farts!
Australian emergency physician Dr. Andy Tagg floated this question via his own Twitter Account, asking, “So, can the bottom-based emissions of someone with coronavirus be silent and deadly?”
To support his claim, Dr Tagg also carried out research on COVID-19 positive patients and found out that 55 per cent of them had the virus present in their faeces. Transmission through faeces is something which experts have warned off in the past as well, considering that most carriers (both symptomatic and asymptomatic patients present gastro-intestinal problems) and residue of the viral strain was observed in some of the patients' faecal residue as well.
Tagg pondered whether farting itself is an “aerosol-generating procedure.” (His determination: yes.) A recent study, in fact, suggested a post-flush toilet plume could even be cause for concern when it comes to spreading the coronavirus via “aerosolized feces.” Plus, scientists have confirmed that fecal-oral transmission itself is an issue due to the presence of the virus in poop, which is why health officials in Oregon and New York have even cautioned against oral contact with feces during sex.
“Studies have clearly shown that a significant percentage of COVID-19 patients do have GI [gastrointestinal] symptoms (alone, or in combination with respiratory or other general symptoms) at the time of illness presentation,” Glatt told The Post via email.
COVID-19 might be transmitted through farts and feces, Airlangga University molecular biologist Chairul Anwar Nidom has said.
According to him, the Harbin Veterinary Research Institute (HVRI) in China tested this hypothesis through dogs and cats. Chairul explained that the researchers were conducting swab tests through the animal's anus – instead of through nose and throat, as done conventionally.
Nidom went on to explain that such a swab test method was normal. The matching protein receptor, called ACE2, was normally found in several human organs – the lungs, kidneys, heart and the gut. Hence this tests were conducted on Dogs & Cats
"The researchers found that the virus transmission through a respiratory system or digestive system depends on the host of the virus," he explained as quoted by tempo.co. So its a bit tricky.
Meanwhile, Eijkman Institute for Molecular Biology director Amin Soebandrio also confirmed that the coronavirus could match with receptors in the mucous membrane of the digestive system.
However, he also said the likelihood of this was low compared to the common transmission through respiratory droplets. So chances are more that we are safe.
However, China’s CDC warned that people who carry the virus and fart without pants on, or if they fart in large amounts, could potentially put others at risk.
So the takeaway is: wear pants, fart safe!
